4:00 pm: An Afternoon at The Bruce…Finding Wellness Through Art

October 24, 2023

Spend an afternoon exploring, discovering, and connecting at the Bruce Museum. Enjoy a private tour of the Museum followed by a discussion on the effects of art on the brain. Deepen your understanding of how the brain neurologically experiences art to create visual stimulation, personal connection, and pathways to well-being with guidance from Creative Arts Therapists and Museum Educators.

A partnership between the Bruce Museum and The Greens at Greenwich, the program starts with time in the Bruce Museum galleries with Corinne Flax, Bruce Museum Manager of School, and Community Partnerships. After the gallery experience Maria Scaros, Creative Arts Therapist and Executive Director, The Greens at Greenwich, will lead the group in a discussion about the effect of the arts on cognitive functionality, mental wellbeing, and our wellness.

Light refreshments will be served following the gallery experience. Please gather in the Museum Lobby, at the base of the Grand Staircase.

Tickets are $10 and will be handled by the Bruce Museum.

Corinne Flax

Working in education has always been a part of Corinne’s life, ever since she first worked as a camp counselor in Chester Connecticut. Since those early days she has received an M.A. from Bank Street in Museum Education and pursued a career in museum education. Corinne joined the Bruce Museum in 2016 as Manager of School and Community Partnerships, where she develops curriculum and community partnerships and works to create intersections between art and science. Corinne recently completed her 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training as well as an addition 20-hour Kids and Teens Teacher Training and is excited to incorporate movement into the museum experience.

Maria Scaros is the Executive Director of the Greens at Greenwich.

Maria Scarosa

As the Executive Director of the Greens at Greenwich, a position Maria has held for over 9 years, she has shaped The Greens into a teaching site for master level students in the creative arts therapies. The Greens is the only memory care assisted living with an ongoing internship program for the creative arts therapies with onsite supervision. A licensed creative arts psychotherapist and board-certified trainer in drama therapy, Maria has developed and implemented innovative programming in various settings throughout her career and has mentored countless creative arts therapists.

Maria was among a group that founded the North American Drama Therapy Association in 1979. She is also an interfaith minister and clinical chaplain, has a bachelor's in interpersonal communications and anthropology from Hunter College; an MA in theater and an MEd in education from Columbia University; and is a doctoral candidate at NYU in Drama Therapy.

Maria’s passion for the creative arts in psychotherapy and her deep affection for the population with whom she works influenced her further studies in the neuroscience of the arts. She believes that the arts are a means to the spirit, the soul, and to our overall wellness as human beings.
