The C’s of Connection
“Memory impairment can lead to feelings of internal and external disconnection, impacting the quality of life. We use our specialized training to pave the road for connection in a safe, supportive, fun and creative environment. Our goal is to provide programs for residents that honor the inherent need for connection of mind, body, & soul, as well as building relationships.” Beth Liebowitz, Program Director.
Creative Arts TherapyThe New Best Medicine in Memory Care!
Art Therapy, Dance/Movement Therapy, Music Therapy, & Drama Therapy all come together as the core of The Greens’ programming connections. We focus on the strengths of each resident and activate creative expression as a vehicle for communication. Each group is facilitated by masters-level, licensed Creative Arts Therapists.
College style lectures reflect the idea, “once a student, always a student.” We match our residents’ yearning for intellectual stimulation fighting the misconception that people with memory impairment do not learn. From historical figures, famous composers, photography, wonders of the world, to the current news, we cater to the interests of our community with expertise from staff, visiting professors and community specialists. We encourage residents to ask questions and stay curious.
Curated Sensory Experiences
Experiences that specifically engage our senses can be a fun way to spark memory recall and relate to the present moment. Cooking classes with our chef, pet therapy thanks to our partnership with The Good Dog Foundation, “scent sessions” by our visiting aromatherapist thanks to our partnership with Essential Awakenings, and gardening are just a few of our offerings.
Community and Intergenerational Engagement
We are an active member of our community. Residents go on trips once a week to museums, restaurants, ferry rides and community events. During COVID, we have had to pause our out trips and provide community activities via Zoom and Facetime. We look forward to getting back out into the community once it is safe.
Our intergenerational programming is robust, including a collaboration with 8th Grade Students from local schools through our weekly partnership with Sweet Readers, and a “buddy system” with students from local private and public schools. Our Artist-In-Residence program with SUNY Purchase offers students and recent graduates from their conservatories a place to perform and hone their professional skills for a truly appreciative audience.
As a teaching facility, we host interns each semester from Sarah Lawrence and SUNY New Paltz who are earning their master’s degrees in the Creative Arts Therapies. Residents feel purpose in sharing their life’s wisdom with younger generations.
Celebration and Spirituality
Weekly spiritual services include Christian Worship Service with Communion, interfaith and Shabbat services. Monthly, we have Bible study and a Judaic Presentation. We honor all faith traditions including holidays and celebrations with music, food and dancing.
Conditioning and Strengthening
Exercise is a daily part of The Greens lifestyle. Programs include yoga, tai chi, Zumba, stretch and strengthen, fitness, walking club and more.
Captivating Concerts and Recreation
Live music is a daily event filling our hallways, great room and gardens with everything from classical to rock & roll. Weekend concerts are an opportunity for families and residents to enjoy a shared event. Recreation is filled with games like bingo, group crosswords, name-that-tune, chess, karaoke, trivia, and more. Residents enjoy independent socializing or quiet time in their beautiful apartment and our safe secure garden.
